One Dark and Stormy Night

Local men from Borve who have come to rescue the crew of the Clan Macquarrie 1953

The Great Storm of late January 1953 brought wind speeds over 100mph, rain, hail, and snow. At sea, ships and small boats alike were caught in the storm and sunk, with hundreds of lives lost.

One Clan Line ship, the Clan Macquarrie, was blown off course on the way to Glasgow, and foundered on rocks near a small village, Borve, on the northwest side of the Isle of Lewis. This is the the remarkable story of the rescue of all hands aboard the Clan Macquarrie, without a single casualty, and why the Cayzer Family retains a relationship with Borve to this day.
